Test # 1: Activity and Curiosity Level
Place the puppy in the middle of the "testing area." Watch him for two minutes. Yeah. That"s all there is to this one! When the puppy approaches you, be still and just ignore him (it will be difficult!).
And here"s how you score him: Give him a score of 1 if he does not move around or explore his environment or if he avoids you. But, if he is running around and jumping about wildly, give him a low score as well.
He gets a moderate score of 2 if he remains still for a few moments, and then only slowly begins to investigate. Give him the same score if he"s cautious about meeting you or sniffing objects around him.
Give him the top score of 3 if he moves about confidently … if he sniffs objects and interactions with them. And, of course, give him a 3 if he approaches you confidently and tries to win your attention!
Test # 2: Social Attraction
In this test, move at least 10 feet away from the dog as you set him on the floor. Kneel down and clap your hands. Call to him in an inviting voice.
Score him a 1 if he ignores you, tries to hide from you or starts to approach you and then turns, trying to get out of the "testing area."
Give him a moderate score of 2 if he approaches you slowly and with a bit of caution.
And give him a high score of 3 if he responds quickly to you and "happily" runs up to you with his tail wagging enthusiastically!
Test # 3: Following
Quickly move from the pup, calling and encouraging him to come with you. Keep moving for about 10 feet.
If he runs in the other direction, give him a 1. Do the same if he runs over to you growling or nipping at you.
Give him a moderate score of 2 if he moves toward you carefully, but never actually reaches you. The pup gets the same score if he shows an interest, but is overly cautious in approaching you.
Give this little Golden Retriever the highest score possible if he quickly and enthusiastically follows you. He may even jump up on you in his enthusiasm.
