Math Topics To Know For The ASVAB Exam

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVAB exam is the military version of an entrance exam. It is designed to test you on the various topics you have learned and studied throughout high school.

The ASVAB has 2 math sections, the AR which stands for Arithmetic Reasoning, and the MK which stands for Mathematics Knowledge. In this article I will focus on the different math topics you are expected to know for the MK section

Basic Algebra

You can think of algebra as solving for x. You may be given multiple questions types where ‘x’ shows up in an equation that you have to solve.

This can be as simple as: 2 + x = 3 or as complex as a quadratic equation in the form of:

x^2 + 9x = 5.

Shapes And Related Equations

You will be expected to recognize the different equations for the circumference, diameter, perimeter, area and volume of different shapes. The include but are not limited to squares, rectangles, circles, and cylinders

Orders Of Operations

This includes but is not limited to the different types of mathematical functions related to basic multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. This also includes exponents, which can be viewed as multiplication a few times over

Fractions

A fraction is simply a number above and below a divisor line, which can be understood as simple division. However, when fractions are given in the problem you will be expected to know how to apply the standard orders of operations as above. This includes applying multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and exponents to fractions.

Inequalities

An inequality simply relates two values with a greater than (>) or less than (

Percentages Including Interest and Tax

Percent comes from the words ‘per’, meaning for each, and ‘cent’ meaning one hundred. In other words, a percentage views a number as it relates to the number 100

On the ASVAB you will be asked to apply these as percent increase or decrease as it relates to sales tax, discounts, pay raises and monetary interest rates

Types of Numbers

The ASVAB will assume that you are comfortable classifying different types of numbers. This includes real and imaginary, odd and even, prime and composite
