Tips on How to Be a Secretary

Being a secretary is not a job that is standard. In different companies the role of a secretary is very different, or you could be a legal or medical secretary etc. So do not assume that all secretarial jobs are the same. Indeed the role of a secretary in a large, corporate organisation may be very different from being a secretary in a small, family run business.

The trick to finding out what is right for you is really by trying out different environments first. This can easily be done by signing up with a good recruitment agency who will help place you in different types of settings, so that you know what feels just right for you.

One way to start off as a secretary is simply to temp and then when permanent positions come up, apply for them until you scoop that dream secretarial job.

If you find that this is too slow a process, then as long as you have all the basic skills, such as typing, filing, organisational etc, then make sure that your curriculum vitae is as robust as it can be and if you need to go on some refresher training courses or do some voluntary work, just to get yourself noticed (in terms of your curriculum vitae) then do this as soon as possible.

Being flexible in terms of where you will work and even the starting salary that you will accept will also help you to land a dream job in the secretarial field. Remember that once you are a secretary it will be easy to move onwards and upwards, so even if the salary looks low to begin with, do not dismiss it. Once you have got your foot in the door, then you will find that more doors open for you and that perfect job is yours!
