Writing a CV - Tips

Writing a CV can be a daunting task but as long as you have a basic idea of how a good CV should look it can be simple to do. Your CV should not be too long but needs to have all the pertinent information about your skills, interest, and achievements in an eye-catching manner as well because a CV is a marketing tool in its own right that allows you to promote yourself to potential employers.

Below are the basic things you need to remember when writing a CV:

o Always start with your personal details such as name, contact details, address, language skills and nationality

o Although it is important to communicate all your good points, it’s important to keep your CV not more than 2 pages long. Remember, your CV is not the only one that a potential employer will read so make sure to stick to the basics

o Focus on your strengths and even your weaknesses should be portrayed in a positive light. While it is imperative to be honest regarding your work history, you can also polish the not so nice facts regarding your career.

o Make sure to include only your most recent experiences. If you have been working for quite some time now, there’s no need to include university projects or achievements unless it is relevant to the job you are applying for.

o If you’re writing a CV for a specific job, be sure to highlight all your relevant significant achievements to explain why you are the perfect candidate for the job

o If you’re writing a CV for a career change on the other hand, focus on your strengths and skills that are easily transportable to your new prospective career

o Last but definitely not the least, before you send your CV do a final run through and make sure you check for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes and that it is addressed to the right person. Accuracy says a lot about your character and personality

A well-written CV is one of your passports to the start of a great career. This is where companies get their first impression of you and will determine if you’ll have a shot at the job and get through to the first interview, so ensure you cover all areas in your CV.
