What an Employer is Looking For in Your CV

When writing your Curriculum Vitae it is really tempting to make yourself out to be the coolest, most interesting person on the planet. But the reality is that most employers are not actually looking to appoint the coolest person in the world, they are looking for someone with the necessary skills, experience and attributes, that are required for the position that they are trying to fill.

Usually, employers have an idea of the kind of person that they want to fill a vacancy. That person may, for example, be required to be very hard working, trustworthy, a team player, able to cope with stress and so on. So your Curriculum Vitae should reflect these type of skills.

If you are sending your Curriculum Vitae to a recruitment agency because you are looking for a temping job, then you should be aware that your Curriculum Vitae should still be as professionally produced as possible.

One thing that all employers will be looking for on your Curriculum Vitae is a spelling mistake. You need to make sure that your Curriculum Vitae has none, because many employers will think that your work is simply sloppy if you cannot even be bothered to spell check your Curriculum Vitae.

Your Curriculum Vitae also needs to demonstrate to the employer that you are a balanced, well-rounded individual, so they will be looking for someone who has interests, hobbies and something of a life apart from studying or work, or both. But don’t make your hobbies sound too extreme or weird, since this may actually backfire on you, with the employer assuming you are a bit strange.

One final consideration to bear in mind is that whatever you put on your Curriculum Vitae, you should be mindful of the fact that the employer may pick up on it at interview and ask you for more details at interview, so make sure that you have not embroidered your experience too much; keep everything factual!
