Game developing is one of the most exciting career paths you can go in today. The gaming business is worth billions of dollars as children and adults eat up the latest gaming systems and the latest games. Every year, talented developers create games that become massive successes and earn their companies tons of money. To the developer, this is considered great job security.
How do they get to that level of job security? They arm themselves with some great ideas, a passion for the gaming industry, and the right skill sets. You probably already have the passion for the industry if you are thinking about a career in the developing industry. That passion has probably given you some really great ideas for games that could be the next big hits. Now how do you get the skill sets required to get a real job in this industry?
Bachelor of Computer Science Degree
It all starts with a bachelor of computer science degree. If you need to work full-time and aren’t sure if you could handle a full-time school schedule on top of it, then consider going back to school part-time. There are some very reasonable part-time bachelors of computer science degrees that place an emphasis on multimedia and game development. This allows you to sit in class less during the week, go to school just a bit longer in the future, and end up with the exact same degree that a full-time student would obtain.
This degree program will teach you all the basic skills needed to get a real job in the game developing world. You will establish a solid foundation of knowledge so you understand all aspects of the business and know how to use all the modern tools used to develop the hit games you see flying off the shelves in local stores.
Once you have this knowledge you can apply it to real jobs within the industry.
Get Some Experience
If you aren’t already working in some lower position within the gaming industry, you need to start trying your hand at developing and showing what you can do. This means you start doing actual game developing on your own so you can say that you have done some of it before when you go in for interviews. This personal experience will serve to show that you a have been in the industry on some level for period of time and are therefore not a complete beginner to the industry.
While you are getting your part-time education, start developing games for the iPod and submitting them to Apple. If you can get even game submitted to Apple with some sales that show consumers are interested, then you have something that shows you know how to come up with great ideas and implement them successfully into games others actually want to play.
Save Your Ideas
Never dismiss an idea! You will start getting tons of ideas for games as you go through your years of education, but you shouldn’t let them go because you don’t have time to actually develop or work with them all. Those ideas could serve you well in the future when you do start working in the industry. Write all of those ideas down and you could use them to make great games once you have your degree.
