XAT 2011 Exam Info

XAT exam is a national level exam organized in India, by the Xavier Labor Research Institute (XLRI) to determine the candidates who deserve admission for Management and Business studies. There are more than 70 institutes including XLRI at Jamshedpur, who are involved in electing these applicants depending on their capabilities. This test has been administered for about 60 years.

XAT exam is normally administered on the first Sunday, in the month of January. Of late, this exam has become more challenging and tough than the CAT exam that is conducted by the IIMs.

Exam Features

The entire   test  is conducted for about 2 hours and 20 minutes and consists of two sections; an  aptitude  test  that goes for 2 hours and an essay writing that goes for 20 minutes.

Every question is of multiple-choice and provides you with 5 options and scores you one mark each.

XAT applies negative scoring for the wrong answers and these negative scorings are progressive and increases when the number of wrong answers crosses a certain limit, which differ every year.

There is restriction on time for every section but the need for the designated limit for each section requires that you allot time for every section to complete everything in the given 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The designated limit for the exam varies for every institute. Normally the exam cutoff for the XLRI that is located in Jamshedpur would be between 32 and 37 and this span is lower in case of other institutes.

Summary of Every Section

The entire exam has questions based on Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability, Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, and Essay Writing. Let us have a brief look about each section.

Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability

This section is designed to test your ability of mathematical skills and quantitative skills as it has questions based on data interpretation and problems based on quantitative analysis. It tests your calculative skills.

Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning

This section has questions to test your skills of critical reasoning and reading comprehension (RC). However, in the recent years, the critical reasoning has been valued more than the RC section. The questions are generally for you to fill the blanks and jumbled sentences to test your grammar usage and command over English.

Analytical Reasoning and Decision Making

This section tests your decision-making ability and problems to test your analytical reasoning. The decision making section is supposed to be more challenging – even more challenging that of an MBA exam.

Essay Writing

This section goes on for about 20 minutes and you are expected to write an essay on the given topic. The topic could be based on diverse topics on any field and assesses your awareness on various issues including the current happenings. This section is evaluated only if you clear the written sections of the test.

All the Best!
