Were it not for a constant influx of qualified network and computer support workers, commercial enterprise in Great Britain (as elsewhere) would surely be brought to its knees. There is an on-going requirement for people to support both users and the systems they work with. Because of the daunting complexities of technology, many more competent professionals are being looked for to dedicate themselves to the various different areas we need to be sure will work effectively.


Discovering job security these days is very unusual. Businesses can throw us from the workforce with very little notice – as long as it fits their needs. However, a fast growing sector, where staff are in constant demand (through a growing shortage of trained people), opens the possibility of true job security.


A recent UK e-Skills study showed that 26 percent of IT jobs cannot be filled mainly due to a huge deficit of trained staff. You have to make sure that all your accreditations are commercially valid and current – you’re wasting your time with programmes that only give in-house certificates. From a commercial standpoint, only the big-boys such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco (for instance) will get you into the interview seat. Nothing else hits the mark.

At the end of the day it isn’t so complicated as you might think to secure the right work – as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; the growing UK skills shortage sees to that.


Having said that, it’s important to have advice and support about your CV and interviews though; and we’d encourage everybody to get their CV updated as soon as training commences – don’t wait till you’ve finished your exams. It’s possible that you won’t have even qualified when you land your first junior support position; but this won’t be the case if your CV isn’t in front of employers. If you’d like to keep travelling time and costs to a minimum, then you’ll probably find that a local IT focused recruitment consultancy may work much better for you than a national service, due to the fact that they are much more inclined to have insider knowledge of the local job scene.


Please be sure that you don’t spend hundreds of hours on your training and studies, only to stop and leave it up to everyone else to secure your first position. Get off your backside and start looking for yourself. Invest as much resource into finding your first job as you did to get trained.


Many students come unstuck over one aspect of their training very rarely considered: How the training is broken down and couriered to your address. Normally, you’ll enrol on a course that takes between and 1 and 3 years and get posted one section at a time – from one exam to the next. This may seem sensible until you think about these factors: What would happen if you didn’t finish each and every module within the time limits imposed? Often the staged order won’t fit you as well as another different route may.


To provide the maximum security and flexibility, most students now choose to make sure that every element of their training is posted to them in one go, with nothing held back. It’s then your own choice how fast or slow and in what order you want to finish things.
