Understanding Speakers and Speaker Guidelines

When most people shop for home audio speakers they often find a lot of information, but don’t know what much of it means. The purpose of this article is to provide a basic understanding of some of the key elements in speakers and to offer some guidelines for the average audio consumer.

Most home audio speakers bought today are 2-way speakers. This means the speaker has a woofer for low or bass sounds and a tweeter for high sounds. There are also 3-way speakers which add a mid-range and these can sound clearer, all things being equal. For most people, however, a good 2-way speaker is fine.

Home audio speakers typically come in either rectangular or round designs. Round ceiling speakers are ideal for background music and rectangular wall speakers are ideal for surround sound systems. With this said, in-wall speakers are often just not practical to install in a given room due to room lay-out and furniture. There are certain designs of round speakers which can help offset the inherent benefits of rectangular speakers for surround sound.

One of the problems with round ceiling speakers is that they basically send the sound straight down beneath them instead of out into the room or area most desired. However, some speakers offer angled woofers so that you can install them in the corners, for example, and still have the sound directed outward into the room.

Typical sizes for speakers are 5.5, 6.5 and 8 inch. The 8 inch will generally have stronger bass with the larger woofer. 8 inch speakers are recommended for surround sound systems and 6.5 inch for background music. I would not recommend 5.25 inch speakers except for very small rooms.

A dual voice coil home audio speaker helps handle small rooms where there isn’t really enough room to place two speakers. The dual voice coil speaker provides for both channels from the amplifier and these can be quite handy in bathrooms, for example.

Power ratings of speakers always get a lot of attention, but often too much attention because power is but one factor among several others. The fact is most people will rarely if ever use the full power of most speakers today because they would soon become deaf if they listened to music at peak power. Power is rated two ways; RMS and Peak. RMS essentially means the volume level the speaker can handle all day long without distorting. Peak is the top power level the speaker can handle before blowing. For most people in most homes, 40-50 watts RMS is plenty. Some speakers only specify their Peak power rating and as a rule-of-thumb, divide the Peak rating by 2 to estimate the RMS rating.

The sensitivity rating should be 89db or more is the usual recommendation. This specification has to do with how clear the speaker sounds, and below 89db the sound clarity may be poor.

Range, or frequency response, represents the low and high end range of the speaker. Here the low end range is the more important of the two, and typically, 45-50Hz is the low end of what most of us can hear. On the high end, most speakers today exceed what we can hear and usually they are 20KHz or more, which is well above what we can hear.

A speaker has to divide the signal coming into it between the tweeter and the woofer. The crossover is in effect a filter that performs this function, but whenever sound is divided there will be some signal loss. A crossover of 12db is the most common today, and again, is fine for most people. Most speakers use passive crossovers, but some high-end speakers use active crossovers which are more sophisticated and allow for adjustments. Few homeowners need speakers with active crossovers or want to make these kinds of adjustments.

The materials that woofers are made of are often cited in speaker specifications. Polypropylene is the most common material used and is okay, but bass sounds will not be as full as with other materials. Kevlar, fiberglass or aluminum woofers will cost more but do offer stronger bass end sounds. For true audiophiles with lots of money there are other highly specialized materials available, but again, just not needed for average listeners.

You will also find that some speakers today feature bridge mount tweeters and this can be a plus. Bridge mount tweeters do not penetrate the woofer cone and will not, therefore, interfere with the woofer low-end sound. This is not to say that there aren’t good speakers who do not bridge mount their tweeters because there are such speakers where very few people could tell the difference. However, the difference is there and if you want a superior speaker then a bridge mount tweeter is one consideration.

The range of speaker prices today is quite remarkable. The truth is you can buy a decent pair of ceiling speakers for as little as $40 and you can buy a great pair for $200. Some people want the best and you can find those for as much as $1,500 a pair. As always, to some degree, you get what you pay for. However, it is also the case that the vast majority of us would have trouble telling the difference in sound from a good quality $100 speaker from a better quality $200 speaker.

Summertime: Get to Know the Bugs That Buzz From Cousin to Cousin

I love the poem Summer by Walter Dean Myers.

The line "Bugs buzzin "from cousin to cousin" puts a smile on my overheated face. Hot summer days and nights are perfect for studying all kinds of insects.

Since I take steps to make myself inedible to insects (see my article How to Enjoy a Tick-Free Nature Experience ) it"s much easier to observe and get to know the ones that crawl or fly across my path.

Here is a list of insects you"re likely to see in northeast North America and some interesting facts about each as spring turns into summer:

Ant Lion: The larval stage of the lacewing fly, this million-year-old insect distinguishing itself by digging conical pits in sandy soil. When an ant crosses the rim of this pit, the soil caves in like a funnel, sending the ant to the waiting ant lion.

Ant: This insect uses a chemical scent (pheromone) to mark the trail from a food source to its nest. The ant"s nest-mates will follow this trail to the food source. That is why the ants travel in a line.

Bees: Bees also use pheromones to alert hive members to a food source. Honeybees have an internal "clock" attuned to the 24-hour solar day, so they can maximize nectar collecting while flowers are in bloom. Bee hives are typically located in the rotten core of a living deciduous tree, like an oak or maple.

Butterflies: These winged beauties are active during the day, typically keep their wings folded when at rest and have long slender antennae with knobbed ends. Beyond that, each species is distinct. The deep purple Mourning Cloak winters over in northeast North America. The non-poisonous Viceroy Butterfly looks so much like the poisonous Monarch Butterfly that it fools predators.

Daddy Longlegs: This harmless insect has a one-piece body; a spider"s body has two segments. I love the delicate feel of a Daddy Longlegs walking along my arm. The longer legs are this insect"s sense organs. If I tap my hand launching Daddy Longlegs into the air, its body turns into a parachute, guiding this sky diver to earth. This is one of my favorite summertime memories.

Earthworms: These worms plow the soil, leaving behind castings rich in nitrogen, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. A good place to see earthworms is any moisture-rich soil, like open woods, a grassy lawn, a garden – especially after it rains. Watch how they move their muscled, segrated bodies. If you watch a Robin pull a worm from the ground, you"ll see the worm hang on sometimes until breaks. The bristles that it holds on with are called setae . Scientists say that if the worm breaks, new segments will grow.

Fireflies: The higher the temperature, the shorter the period between the flashes this insect makes. When attracting fireflies, notice that each different species of firefly has a distinct pattern of flashing light.

Hornets / Wasps: There are more of these staining insects flying around late summer, once the workers are no longer needed to forage for food to feed the larvae. Unlike Yellow Jackets, which build their nests underground, Hornets and Wasps build hanging paper-like nests.

Mosquitoes: Entomologists say that larval mosquitoes live harmlessly in water, adult mosquitoes feast on nectar from flowers and when the egg-laying female mosquito does bite, it usually is species-specific. Most mosquitoes prefer the blood of other species to humans, but thanks to habitat destruction, we are often all that"s on the menu.

Moths: These winged insects are typically nocturnal, rest with their wings spread and have short, feathery antennae. They typically have subdued colors and will flock to a source of light, making them another fun species to study at night. Bats eat moths and so moths have discovered ways to "hear" the bat sonar and avoid capture by either fancy flying or folding their wings and dropping to the ground.

Spiders: This is another group with a range of distinct members. Wolf Spiders do not weave webs at all, but roam for prey. Certain spiders weave distinct web patterns, others weave distinct shapes. Orb Spiders typically live outdoors, while Brown Recluse Spiders may live indoors or outdoors. In addition to making spider web art, it"s fascinating to watch a spider spin a web. Could you have as efficiently with thread?

Water Striders: These insects use their short front legs to assist their prey, their middle legs as oars and their hind legs as rudders. They can balance on the water surface without making ripples. Other insects, including moths, that touch the surface of the water, make ripples. Those ripples tell the water strider just where its meal is located. Water striders move by giving a backward push with its middle legs, which do create small ripples, but do not break the surface tension of the water.

Helping Your ADD / HD Child

A number of factors need to be considered when you are told that your child is ADD / HD. The first thing you want to do is to understand all you can about ADD / HD. You also want to sit down and list what it means for your child, as a unique individual being, to be ADD / HD. Remember that this diagnosis is observational in nature.

If your child is ADD / HD, then your child was born ADD / HD. What has happened that has made it need to be labeled now? What were the stops along way that led from high energy, curious, creative and bright to disabled? Start a journal about your child, ask for observations, especially from the people who are around your child when you are not.

Ask yourself and other key people in your child"s life questions like: Are there times of day, days of the weeks, or certain situations which seem to trigger the child? Keep a food log and keep track as much as possible of what your child is eating. Are they certain foods that cause spikes and crashes? Or certain foods that lead to acting out or melting down? How about certain situations or people? Did the child have a year at school, or experience at camp where their behavior seemed to go to unmanageable? Were there major shifts in your child"s world such as living situations, acquiring or loss of a close friend or family member?

Talk with your child and have them tell you as much about their days as possible and compare it with what other people experienced of them that day. See where they may be making incorrect assumptions or did not understand the larger picture of what was going on in a certain situation.

Keep in mind that all very bright children have a great deal going on in their head and are impatient to learn, to understand, and will disconnect when bored.

If teachers or other people are strictly pushing the idea that your child is ADD / HD, ask them to be as specific as possible as to why. In order to gain a better understanding of what is going on, enlist them in getting the answers to the questions you are keeping track of. Also, ask what they think the solutions are if your child is ADD / HD. If they want to move to a drug based solution, make sure you are clear if there are benefits for them to have your child drugged and easier to manage.

Maybe your child is gifted with ADD / HD, so what you want to stay clear on is: When did that gift become an unmanageable problem, and will medication solve problems or mask them? First, remember that many factors are going on in your child"s life which could lead to a request for an official diagnosis and a recommendation of medication, and that in medicating, those factors will easily get lost because the medication seems to solve all the problems.

As you draw the picture of your child and your child"s relationship with an ADD / HD diagnosis, starting things and see how they shift the issues. Begin with diet, then look at what shifts can be made in the environment. Would smaller classrooms, more interactive educational methods and more challenging curriculum keep your child more focused and moving at a faster, more engaged pace that would both better serve your child"s learning, growth, and development, as well as, eliminate request for labeling or medication ?

Keep the following things in mind if a diagnosis of ADD / HD is in the air:

Issues may be caused or exacerbated by diet, environmental, emotional, mental, even undetected physiological factors.

Second, if medicating, what are the short and long term side effects to the mental, emotional and physical well being of your child? Will this label serve them or hold them back?

Third, is the child being held responsible for situations where the failure is not their? Is their "failure" on account of an educational system that does not know how to work with these children? Are teachers or other education or care providers ill equipped to provide what your child needs to fly and to flourish? I want to make it clear when I say "ill equipped," it could be that the primary adults involved are ill qualified, or that the situation which is they forced to function is incapable of providing the needed environment. But what I also want to make very clear here is that if we are medicating your child, or any child, because of the failure to properly provide the teachers, the classes, the resources needed, and that if they were all in place that a child would not have to be medicated, then medicating is morally reprehensible and we must examine our priorities in this country.

Or is the need to medicate them because we do not offer the support, education and resources to the family unit? Are we medicating them because the family can not or does not know what a bad diet is, or how to give these children the support they need? Or because the information is controlled by groups, institutions, and business who do not have the best interest of your child at hand? Do parents make the choice to medicate their child because of the one sided information that they are given, or are they coerced or manipulated into feeling that this is the only course of action when in fact it is not? Is it made too easy in this chaotic, sped up, crazy world to convince yourself (to be convinced) that the quick fix is the right one. In other words, that a happy meal and pill is good parenting,

Lastly, dig past the top layer of information if you really want to know. Plenty of information is available on the internet. What you will often come across first is the controlled information. There are a number of studies and evidence that on the surface support ADD / HD as a disability diagnosis and say that medication is the primary option. Large non-profit groups who serve this issue that are underwritten by the drug companies that manufacture it. But when you dig deeper, the evidence is not so clear or conclusive. The parts of the studies that question medicating as a viable option are often left out. We hear about the brain scans, but we only hear half a story. We do not hear at all about the studies that have discovered alarming concerns about medicating these children because they are buried by the information provided by supporters of the pharmaceutical companies, and you have to dig deeper to find them.

Along the way you will also find any number of all natural one stop shopping wonders that claim to cure ADD / HD, and you should be just as wary of them. You need to have a whole child understanding, create whole child solutions and make sure that they represent the unique child that is yours. No quick fixes, no one size fits all approaches. And if everything I"ve said so far has not made your head spin fast enough, I do not see AD / HD as a disability, something one needs to get cured from or outgrow. It is part of an evolutionary process. These children and adults have a diff-ability, not a disability, they learn and process differently, they are not less able. In fact, they are often more capable when they are set up to succeed, and not fail.

The question is: how do you want to best support your child? To fit in – or to be who they are, and be all they can be?
